Two year MOT tests and de-regulated prices
These are just two of the proposals being considered by the government at the moment. Why? well their line is that it's unfair on the U.K driver to have a yearly MOT test when some other european countries don't. At first this may seem like great news but consider a few things first.
Its is obviously a massive step backwards in road safety. You may well be a conscientious driver who has your vehicle regularly serviced, but what of other road users that are happy to drive round in a vehicle that just scraped through the MOT nearly two years ago? In the event of an accident will the insurance pay out when either vehicle is found to be defective?
Another point is that there will be more vehicles on the road with defective lighting making accidents all the more difficult to avoid. Not that many people seem to indicate properly these days any way (am I getting old or something, perhaps it's having kids. Now I'm rambling, I really must be getting old. Hmm, I could just fancy a Worthers Origional .......aaaaarrrggghh).
With age comes cynicism and as I'm obviously taking the more mature stand point here, I'll tell you what I think (for what its worth). Ok, a big percentage of MOT failures involve tyres and light bulbs. They are both easily fixed but fail quite regularly. Now a friendly policeman with targets to meet will be much happier if there are more faulty vehicles out there. Think of all those fixed penalties swelling the coffers.
This brings me to my final point. I don't know if you have noticed this but it seems to me that when ever the government want to make changes that may be unpopular with the voting public, they unveil an absolutely absurd scheme that only a mad person in their wildest moment could dream up. This unveiling is usually closely followed by the press blowing the matter out of all proportion and the government finally revealing a less severe scheme that seems quite reasonable by comparison.
So if the absurd idea is the two yearly MOT, then what is the less absurd scheme - I hear you ask. Well it's deregulation of the MOT fee. This means that MOT stations will be able to set the MOT fee at whatever level they choose. Some garages will choose higher, some lower but here's the sting - The MOT fee will then incur VAT, estimated to be in the region of an extra 300 MILLION pounds of revenue for the government.
Anybody fancy a bet on the scheme they will finally settle on?
