Frequently asked questions
- Do I have to leave my MOT test as late as possible?
Hell no! you can have it done up to one calendar month before you current MOT certificate runs out. e.g. If your MOT expires on the 20th of august, you can have your test anytime after the 20th of July - That's virtually a thirteen month MOT!
- My MOT ran out yesterday but I've booked a test for tomorrow, can I still drive my car?
No. The only time you can drive without an MOT is when you are traveling to a pre booked MOT test. And don't forget that the police can tell just by checking your reg plate against the MOT database - consider yourself warned.
- I had my MOT last week and I've just checked my oil level and its low. Why did you not notice it?
The MOT is only a visual safety inspection. It does not and cannot replace a service. Things like the oil level, coolant level and tyre pressures simply do not come into the test.
- I had my MOT 2 months ago and now my brakes are worn out.
O.K there are a few things to bear in mind here. Firstly, if the tester cannot see the brakes then he/she cannot test or fail them (the MOT test allows for NO stripping of the vehicle - not even wheel trims!). Secondly, the MOT test only requires 1.5mm of friction material on the brake pad to pass the test and this would soon wear away (by the way it is near impossible to gauge this by eye!). Thirdly, a tester can not fail a vehicle for something that may wear out in the near future, though a yellow advisory note(VT32) should be issued.
